CMYK+P: Paper is the Fifth Colour

Session Details

In a world saturated by digital messaging, print continues to stand apart by creating something screens simply cannot: a physical, emotional and memorable brand experience. Yet the impact of print is not determined by ink alone. The choice of paper and printed substrate plays a fundamental role in how a message is perceived, felt, valued and remembered – making paper the true fifth colour in the design process.

Today’s printed substrates are far more than a surface for ink. They are a strategic communication tool that adds personality, authenticity and distinction. Through the intelligent selection of texture, shade, finish, fibre composition and innovative material combinations, brands can create highly personalised experiences that resonate with specific audiences, reinforce brand values and increase emotional engagement.

This session explores how paper choice transforms print from a visual medium into a multi-sensory experience. The right substrate doesn’t simply support the message – it amplifies it, influencing perception, trust, quality and purchasing decisions while creating a deeper emotional connection with the recipient.

Using practical examples and real-world marketing campaigns, we’ll demonstrate how thoughtful substrate selection and personalisation can elevate campaign performance, improve response rates and create memorable brand experiences that digital channels struggle to replicate. Attendees will discover how strategic use of paper can differentiate communications, increase the perceived value of both the message and the brand, and unlock the full commercial power of print in today’s omnichannel marketing environment.

Because in exceptional print, the substrate isn’t just part of the design – it’s part of the story.
